Increased Prevalence of Celiac Disease in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objectives: Immune regulation seems to be altered in cystic fibrosis (CF), thus potentially predisposing patients developing autoimmune diseases (AID). In this meta-analysis, we aimed evaluate the prevalence of celiac disease (CeD) among CF as by far most commonly reported population and, secondly, review observations on other, less frequently studied diseases. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search for studies that discussed AIDs patients. Following standard selection and data collection, calculated pooled raw with 95% confidence intervals (CI) biopsy-verified CeD seropositivity. Results: Out 21 eligible studies, 15 CeD. Pooled was 1.8% (CI 1.1–2.7%) according homogeneous dataset from six prospective, consecutive screening while it proved 2.3% 1.1–4.7%) heterogeneous other studies. Tissue transglutaminase IgA positivity detected 4.5% cases 2.8–6.9%), tissue IgA–endomysial antibody double found 2.4% them 1.5–3.9%). Findings were strongly limited. Conclusions: The seemed more than twice high compared global prevalence; therefore, routine could considered CF.
